Gold Custom Size
What size power supply would I need for my custom gaming PC?
Hi,
I’m buying my own components to build a gaming pc and so far have found a lot of power supplies I think would work. Definetly a 1000W PSU but that’s expensive for me (on a budget).
My components:
- Gigabyte S775 Intel P43 ATX
- Western Digital Caviar 500GB S300 16mb 7200rpm
- LG Electronics 22 x DVDRW SATA blackbare + sw
- Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE 7.1 OEM
- Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 CPU Cooler
- Intel Q8200 Core 2 Quad S775 4MB 2.33GHz 1333FSB
- MSI Wireless LAN PCI Card With 3 External Antennas
- OCZ Technology 2×2GB 240DIMM PC2-6400 Gold
- XFX GeForce 9800GT 512MB DDR3 PCIE 2XDVI 625/1.8GHz
- Antec Nine Hundred/Ultimate Gamer Case no PSU

I would like to add maybe another graphics card in the future (SLI) and maybe a few more hard drives – also some more case fans.
What size power supply would I need and any recommendations for a brand?
Thanks.
The P43 motherboard will not allow you to add a second 9800GT. If you want to add a second nVidia 9800GT later on, you need an nVidia SLI motherboard.
The P43 is not an SLI motherboard. The P43 is a very fine single-slot motherboard, for those of us who are satisfied with running a single graphics card only. For a single-card system, you don’t need anything more than a high-quality 500W PSU.
Personally, I wouldn’t bother with SLI. A P43 board with a single GTX285 will beat the performance of an SLI board with two 9800GTs. And the P43/GTX285 setup is a lot less complex.
Also, P43 motherboards are available in both DDR2 and DDR3 variants. If you want to use DDR2 RAM, make sure the P43 board you are getting has DDR2 slots.
Hope this helps.
