How to run a viscous oil sample into GCMS?

GCMS technician told me that my project sample (cooking oil) is too viscous. He suggests me to dilute the oil sample with solvent to make it less viscous. If i do that, will it effect the result later on? Should i do correction calculation and if yes, how to do it? Btw the GCMS we have is manual injection type.

Yes, you can dilute it with a non polar solvent to lower the viscosity of the oil. You should use a high purity solvent to prevent the appearance of solvent impurity peaks, but also inject a solvent blank to check for any interference.

If you’re simple looking for purity by area, then the exact dilution amount isn’t really needed. If you are comparing the product to a standard (conducting a wt/wt assay) then you’ll need to know the exact amount of oil / solvent present in the injection. Either way, the technician can subtract out the solvent peaks form the integration calculations.
