antique organza wedding dress?
I want to be married in my grandma’s wedding dress (with some alterations of course) but it has yellowed with age. Does anyone have any ideas how I can whiten such delicate fabric?
It’s from somewhere between 1948-1952. I would be finding an extremely experienced seamstress as I also want some handbeading to be added. It was a very simple dress but I want to make it my own and use it for sentimental reasons.
An organza dress is probably silk, and silk can be very delicate even when new. It may not be possible to whiten it, and even alterations may be difficult to carry out – the fabric may not be able to stand the strain of being handled.
This of course depends on how old the wedding dress is. If it’s pre-1950 you may wish to find a costumer who is experienced with handling older materials – your local museum is probably your best bet. However, if the dress is post-1950 the fabric may be strong enough to handle being manipulated, but even then I’d think about hiring an extremely experienced seamstress and not just a friend with a FIT diploma.

Is it possible to dye a wedding dress white?
Hi, my mother offered to let me wear her wedding dress in my wedding. The problem is that it’s ivory instead of white, because it’s from her second marriage. I can justify wearing a white dress and would definitely prefer to, but it would mean a lot to my mom if I would wear hers. Is there a way to have an ivory wedding gown dyed white?
If you did try this, you would use a colour remover rather than a dye.
However, I wouldn’t try it myself. As with dying, different fabrics react differently to the colouring process. If the dress is not ALL the same fabric, you will end up with different parts of the dress in different versions of ivory or white.
If you have your heart set on this ask at your local dry cleaners who might handle this in your area. I doubt anyone will guarantee results for you.
